Tesla Launches High Volume Production Of Electric Semi Trucks

Tesla is scaling up its electric vehicle operations with the official opening of a massive 1.7-million-square-foot factory dedicated to its Class 8 Electric Trucks. Following years of production delays, the company successfully launched high-volume manufacturing in April 2026. With a new facility now operational, analysts anticipate an output of 5,000 to 15,000 units this year, eventually ramping up to an annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles. The push to expand the fleet is supported by significant demand, including a record-breaking order of 500 trucks from the Swedish transport firm Einride.

The electric semi-truck is designed to offer a range of up to 500 miles on a single charge. To support long-haul operations, Tesla has developed a Megacharger network capable of delivering 1.2 MW of power, which can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. The vehicle features three all-electric motors and an independent front suspension, providing a smoother ride and responsive handling without the need for gear shifting. Aerodynamic design choices further optimize the truck's efficiency and overall range.

Performance metrics for the Class 8 Electric Truck highlight its competitive edge over traditional diesel alternatives. While a fully loaded diesel semi typically requires about 60 seconds to reach 60 mph, Tesla reports that its electric model can achieve the same speed in 24 seconds when fully loaded to its 80,000-pound capacity. When operating without a trailer, the acceleration time drops to 12.5 seconds. Tesla is currently positioning these vehicles in the market with a reported price of $260,000 for the 325-mile Standard Range model and $290,000 for the Long Range version.
