Iron Air Batteries Enable Long Duration Renewable Energy Storage

Iron Air Batteries Enable Long Duration Renewable Energy Storage

Iron-air battery technology is emerging as a critical solution for overcoming the inherent intermittency of wind and solar power. As renewable energy becomes increasingly central to the global grid, the challenge of weather-dependent output remains a significant hurdle. Aytac Yilmaz, co-founder and CEO of Ore Energy, is spearheading efforts to develop batteries capable of 100-hour energy storage. By providing a reliable alternative to fossil fuels, this innovation aims to stabilize energy supplies, ensuring that power generated from renewable sources remains available even when environmental conditions are not ideal for generation.

The transition toward sustainable energy relies heavily on the ability to store power efficiently for extended periods. While lithium-ion batteries have dominated the market, they face limitations regarding long-duration storage and cost-effectiveness. Iron-air technology is being positioned as a viable successor, offering a robust method to manage the fluctuations associated with solar and wind energy. By focusing on these long-duration storage capabilities, developers hope to create a more resilient infrastructure that can effectively replace traditional fossil fuel-based power plants.

Aytac Yilmaz brings a deep academic and technical background to this challenge. Originally from Turkey, where he completed his undergraduate studies at Boğaziçi University, Yilmaz later moved to the United States to earn a master’s degree from the University of Florida. His expertise in materials science was further refined during his doctoral studies at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. This specialized knowledge informs his current leadership at Ore Energy, where the focus remains on scaling iron-air technology to meet the growing demands of the global renewable energy sector.
