Carbon Noir Reimagines Iconic Auto Rickshaw As Electric Vehicle
The iconic Indian auto rickshaw, a staple of South Asian transit, is receiving a futuristic reimagining through a concept design by Carbon Noir. Dubbed the "Cyberpunk 2077 Auto Rickshaw," this electric vehicle replaces traditional fuel and CNG-powered engines with a modern electric powertrain. The design introduces a hardbody structure, modernized lighting, and a functional boot made possible by the compact nature of an electric platform. While it retains the classic handlebar steering and open-side configuration, the concept shifts the interior to a 2x2 seating layout, blending traditional cultural utility with contemporary electric vehicle aesthetics.
The original auto rickshaw, which traces its roots to the Italian Piaggio Apé, has remained largely unchanged in its aesthetic for decades. Carbon Noir’s concept seeks to modernize this familiar silhouette. By moving away from the traditional metal armature and fabric roof, the new design offers a more robust hardbody. The exterior styling draws comparisons to the Renault Twizy, though it maintains the spiritual essence of the original vehicle. The inclusion of a dedicated luggage compartment is a significant departure from standard models, where the rear-mounted engine typically occupies that space.
Despite these updates, the vehicle remains deeply rooted in its heritage. It keeps the characteristic handlebar controls and an asymmetric entry system, featuring doors on the left side while leaving the right side open with a safety bar. This design choice preserves the "non-verbal contract" of the auto rickshaw experience, where passengers remain exposed to the elements. While the electric drivetrain offers a more energy-efficient alternative to current models, the concept maintains the functional, no-frills spirit of the classic three-wheeler, proving that even a modern electric makeover can respect the cultural identity of a public transport icon.
