BYD Tests New Luxury Sedan Amid Solid-State Battery Speculation

The upcoming Yangwang executive sedan features a traditional luxury design while industry observers monitor potential integration of advanced solid-state battery technology.

BYD Tests New Luxury Sedan Amid Solid-State Battery Speculation

Chinese automaker BYD is testing a new ultra-luxury executive sedan under its high-end Yangwang brand. Spotted in China, the vehicle measures approximately 5.5 meters in length and features a boxy profile with coach doors. While the company has not confirmed technical specifications, reports suggest the sedan could utilize solid-state battery technology, which aims to increase energy density without adding significant battery weight.

Solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion cells with a solid material. This transition allows for the use of electrode materials like lithium metal, potentially offering longer driving ranges for electric vehicles. According to the US Department of Energy, solid electrolytes may also reduce risks associated with leakage if a battery is damaged, though overall safety remains dependent on specific construction and materials.

The Yangwang sedan is positioned at the top of BYD’s product lineup and incorporates the company’s quad-motor e4 platform. General manager Hu Xiaoqing described the vehicle as the result of three years of development intended to establish a presence in the ultra-luxury executive segment. The sedan's design draws visual comparisons to established flagships like the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Other manufacturers are also exploring solid-state technology. In May 2025, BMW began testing Solid Power’s all-solid-state cells in an i7 prototype to evaluate cell expansion and temperature management. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz reported in August 2025 that an EQS prototype equipped with Factorial lithium-metal solid-state cells achieved a range of 1,205 kilometers. Mercedes-Benz noted that these development cells provided 25 percent more usable energy compared to conventional packs of similar size and weight.

For BYD, the performance of the Yangwang sedan remains subject to official confirmation of its battery specifications and subsequent real-world testing. The company continues to focus on combining its technological capabilities with traditional luxury design elements to differentiate its flagship offerings in the competitive electric vehicle market.
