The 1.5-degree threshold measures warming relative to preindustrial levels between 1850 and 1900. While over 190 nations pledged to remain below this limit to avoid extreme weather and ecosystem collapse, current emission trajectories suggest warming could reach 2.7 to 3 degrees Celsius by 2100. Even if existing government promises are fully realized, temperatures may still rise by 1.7 to 1.8 degrees. Experts stress that the longer the planet remains in this overshoot zone, the greater the risk of crossing environmental thresholds that cannot be reversed on human timescales.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted a three-pronged approach to address the crisis: accelerating the transition to renewable energy, phasing out fossil fuels, and slashing methane pollution while protecting natural carbon sinks like forests and oceans. Researchers noted that the window for rapid emission reductions has narrowed significantly due to past inaction. The impacts of this failure are already visible, as seen in recent deadly heatwaves across Europe and North America, which have overwhelmed the adaptive capacities of even the most developed nations.
Climate scientists warn that the world is currently unprepared for the accelerating pace of warming, which is increasing by half a degree Celsius every 20 years. As extreme weather events become more frequent, the gap between necessary climate adaptation and current capabilities continues to widen. Experts emphasize that the focus must now shift toward limiting the peak temperature and minimizing the duration of the overshoot to protect the most vulnerable communities from unbearable environmental consequences.
