Tandem PV Launches World Most Efficient Solar Panel Technology

Tandem PV is preparing to launch the world’s most efficient solar panel later this year, marking a significant shift in photovoltaic technology. The company recently shipped its first production-quality modules and is initiating paid pilot deployments with independent power producers to establish bankability. By utilizing a 4-terminal mechanically-stacked architecture, Tandem applies a perovskite layer onto the top glass of standard silicon modules. This cell-agnostic approach allows for high efficiency—reaching 30.4% in testing—while remaining compatible with various silicon technologies. The company aims for gigawatt-scale manufacturing by 2028, targeting a 1,000-watt module as it transitions from R&D to commercialization.

The core of Tandem PV’s innovation lies in its ability to enhance existing silicon solar cells by adding a thin, liquid-based perovskite coating. Because this design treats the underlying silicon as a pass-through cost, customers can select their preferred cell technology, including domestic options that qualify for federal manufacturing tax credits. This flexibility is expected to provide a substantial advantage in the utility-scale market, where the company has already secured letters of intent for approximately $1 billion in solar modules. By focusing on engineering improvements rather than scientific breakthroughs, Tandem projects a steady efficiency growth trajectory toward 37% by 2030.

Addressing historical concerns regarding perovskite stability, Tandem PV intends to offer a 30-year warranty with an annual degradation rate of 1% or less. Recent outdoor testing of their glass-glass modules has shown no measurable degradation over the first year. Furthermore, the company reports that its modules feature a temperature coefficient near -0.15%/°C, which is significantly better than current high-end silicon alternatives. With $100 million in funding secured and a manufacturing process that leverages off-the-shelf semiconductor equipment, the company is positioning itself to scale rapidly, aiming to redefine industry standards for power density and levelized cost of energy.
