Wood Mackenzie has released its inaugural global ranking of battery energy storage system (BESS) integrators, naming Sungrow as the industry leader. The report arrives as annual global battery storage installations surpassed the 100 GW milestone in 2025. The assessment evaluates factory-assembled, AC-integrated solutions based on ten key metrics, including safety, financial stability, and supply chain resilience. Following Sungrow, Tesla and CATL secured the second and third positions, respectively. The findings underscore a shift in the market where long-term operational performance, technical expertise, and vertical integration have become the primary benchmarks for utilities and developers.
The ranking highlights a clear trend toward vertical integration among top-tier suppliers. Every company in the top ten manufactures at least one critical component—such as battery cells, power conversion systems, or battery management systems—in-house. This strategy enhances quality control and product compatibility. Furthermore, the industry is demonstrating significant financial and technical maturity, with nine of the leading firms investing over 4% of their annual revenue into research and development. Most of these top-performing companies also reported positive profitability, providing the necessary stability to support long-term service agreements and performance warranties for their clients.
Experience remains a vital differentiator in the sector, as six of the top ten integrators possess over a decade of expertise in project execution. As BESS projects grow in scale and complexity, the ability to manage system design and commissioning has become essential. Wood Mackenzie awarded a Grade A rating to 24 manufacturers, signaling a broader maturation of the global market. Looking ahead, the consultancy suggests that competitive success will increasingly depend on a company’s ability to navigate international trade policies and deliver consistent project execution across diverse global markets while maintaining rigorous safety and thermal management standards.
