Shenzhen-based company PHOSGO has launched the Go5 Solar E-Bike Series on Indiegogo, marking the debut of the world’s first mass-produced solar-powered e-bike line. Designed for off-grid travel and camping, the bikes feature four integrated photovoltaic panels built into the wheels, offering a 200-watt peak capacity. By utilizing high-efficiency back-contact solar cells, the system allows riders to charge their batteries while parked or extend their range while moving. This innovation aims to eliminate charging anxiety for outdoor enthusiasts, providing a sustainable way to maintain mobility in remote locations far from traditional electrical outlets.
The Go5 series utilizes advanced solar technology, with each wheel housing two 50-watt panels. These panels boast a conversion efficiency exceeding 26%, with electrical contacts hidden behind the cells to ensure a clean, light-facing surface. Energy is transferred from the rotating wheels to a frame-mounted controller via a custom conductive hub. Under optimal conditions, the system can generate approximately 138 watt-hours of power in four hours of sunlight. Depending on the model and usage, this can recover up to 17 miles of range per day, significantly extending the distance riders can travel between plug-in charges.
Two models are currently available: the Go5 Ultra and the Go5 Pro. The Ultra is built for long-distance touring, featuring a 750-watt Bafang mid-drive motor and a 720-watt-hour battery, offering an estimated combined range of up to 140 miles with solar recovery. The Pro model, aimed at weekend trips, includes a 500-watt motor and a 480-watt-hour battery, providing a combined range of roughly 110 miles. Both bikes incorporate smart features, including a CAN bus system, 4G, GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to monitor ride data and security through the PHOSGO mobile application.
PHOSGO, founded by CEO John Wang, brings nine years of experience in photovoltaics and consumer electronics to this project. The company previously managed the Mangoal brand, which focused on intelligent vision systems. The Go5 series is currently available for pre-order on Indiegogo, with early bird pricing set at $1,899 for the Pro and $2,499 for the Ultra. While the bikes are launching with specific configurations for the US market, PHOSGO plans to offer regional versions tailored to meet the legal requirements of the EU, Australia, and other global markets.
