New Consortium Plans National Charging Network For Electric Aircraft

Archer Aviation, BETA Technologies, and Macquarie Capital have launched a collaborative initiative to establish a national charging network for electric air taxis. Known as America’s Consortium for Electric Skyways (ACES), the project aims to deploy up to 250 charging sites across the United States over the next ten years. By utilizing the open Combined Charging Standard (CCS), the consortium intends to create an interoperable infrastructure that supports various electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, cargo operators, and ground support vehicles, effectively lowering deployment costs while accelerating the commercial viability of advanced air mobility in major metropolitan markets.

The initiative focuses on strategic locations, including airports and future vertiports, with initial development centered in states like California, Texas, Florida, and New York. By adopting a shared infrastructure model, the partners hope to prevent the fragmentation often seen in emerging technology sectors. This approach allows multiple manufacturers and operators to utilize the same facilities, ensuring that the network remains scalable as the industry matures. The project aligns with the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, which seeks to prepare the national airspace for the introduction of commercial electric aviation.

BETA Technologies is set to supply the necessary charging hardware, while Archer Aviation will integrate the network into its passenger service operations. Macquarie Capital is managing the financial framework required to secure sites and facilitate facility development. Industry leaders emphasize that a standardized, dependable charging network is essential for the long-term success of electric aviation. Beyond passenger transport, the infrastructure is designed to accommodate medical transport and cargo flights, as well as airport ground vehicles, providing a versatile solution that helps airports manage the transition to electric operations without the need for redundant, proprietary charging systems.
