The Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Council has expressed support for the European Commission’s Electrification Action Plan, highlighting the essential role of long-duration storage in Europe’s transition to clean energy. As the continent shifts toward greater electrification in transport, industry, and buildings, the Council emphasizes that LDES technologies are vital for balancing supply and demand, improving energy security, and reducing renewable energy curtailment. By integrating these storage solutions, Europe can maintain a reliable and affordable power grid while supporting industrial competitiveness through the consistent delivery of low-carbon heat and electricity for various sectors.
Will Broad, the Global Director of Policy and Markets at the LDES Council, noted that while the European Commission has correctly identified the need for long-duration flexibility, the focus must now shift toward implementation. He argued that achieving these goals requires more than just setting deployment targets; it necessitates the creation of robust market frameworks and electricity price signals that properly reward flexibility. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of procurement mechanisms that offer long-term investment certainty, which is essential for projects that face lengthy development timelines regarding grid connections, financing, and permitting processes.
The LDES Council also acknowledged the Tripartite Agreement on Energy Storage as a positive development for the sector. However, the organization stressed that Europe must look beyond 2028 to ensure the long-term success of its energy transition. By building on current momentum with a comprehensive deployment framework, the region can provide the necessary confidence for investors to develop the next generation of storage projects. The Council remains committed to collaborating with Member States and industry partners to translate these high-level ambitions into practical market structures that foster a resilient, competitive, and sustainable energy system.
