The Indonesian government has officially inaugurated an ambitious program to develop 100 GW of solar power capacity by 2029. President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the administration’s commitment to this goal, which aims to surpass the nation’s current total electricity generation capacity of 88 GW. The initiative will utilize ground-mounted, floating, and rooftop solar installations, alongside battery energy storage systems, to enhance energy security and replace diesel generation. With an estimated investment requirement of $73 billion, the program is expected to generate over 5.5 million jobs while significantly expanding the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The rollout will occur in phases, starting with an initial 17 GW target. Currently, 14 solar projects totaling 5.2 GW are already in various stages of development, with two facilities already operational, six under construction, and six awaiting investors. The launch was marked by the start of a 305 MW solar project paired with a 1 GWh battery energy storage system in Gilimanuk, Bali, managed by the state utility PLN. This effort is designed to electrify rural areas and provide a more reliable, decentralized power supply across the archipelago.
Industry experts, including the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), have described the three-year timeline as highly ambitious. To reach this goal, the IESR stresses the need for a robust national implementation framework, regulatory certainty, and improved coordination between government ministries, financial institutions, and the private sector. The think tank has proposed six priority measures, including the finalization of a dedicated presidential regulation and the creation of a transparent, competitive procurement pipeline. Success will ultimately depend on the government’s ability to connect large-scale solar PV capacity to the grid efficiently before the 2029 deadline.
