FAW Group has intensified the competition in China’s electric vehicle sector by unveiling a new ultra-fast charging battery developed for its Hongqi brand in partnership with Lishen Battery. Recent performance testing at 25°C confirmed the battery can charge from 10% to 70% in under four minutes, specifically 3 minutes and 41 seconds. Reaching a 97% state of charge takes just over eight minutes. This technological milestone, which utilizes a 12C peak charging rate, highlights a broader trend among Chinese manufacturers to accelerate charging speeds, following similar advancements recently introduced by companies like BYD and Geely.
The battery achieves these rapid charging times through several technical innovations, including a high-efficiency anode and a proprietary electrolyte designed to lower the migration barrier for lithium ions. By employing bulk doping modification and a composite carbon source coating, the engineering team successfully reduced internal resistance by 15% compared to standard cells, significantly improving charge transfer efficiency. These structural improvements allow the battery to handle high-power energy intake while maintaining stability and speed throughout the charging process.
To ensure safety and performance during high-power sessions, the system incorporates an intelligent liquid cooling mechanism that maintains a uniform temperature across the pack, keeping variations within 3°C. An adaptive strategy continuously monitors the cells, managing temperature rise and power output in real-time. By utilizing a closed-loop verification process for voltage and capacity, the battery prevents risks such as overvoltage or overcharging. This development marks another significant step in the ongoing race among Chinese automakers to provide consumer-ready flash-charging capabilities, joining recent market entries like the BYD Blade Battery 2.0 and Geely’s Golden Brick.
