Google and Cypress Creek Energy have officially commenced construction on the Steel River Energy Center in Mississippi County, Arkansas, marking the launch of the largest solar and battery storage project currently underway in the United States. Upon its full completion by 2029, the facility will feature 2.5 gigawatts of solar capacity and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, providing enough electricity to power more than 315,000 homes annually. This initiative represents Google’s largest global solar and storage investment, reinforcing the company’s commitment to clean energy while bolstering the local power grid and supporting regional economic development.
The project is notable for its commitment to a domestic supply chain, utilizing 100% U.S.-made solar modules and structural steel. The steel piles are manufactured locally by PACO Steel using materials sourced from the nearby U.S. Steel plant in Osceola, with each component proudly marked as a product of Mississippi County. Cypress Creek Energy CEO Kevin Smith highlighted that the development serves as definitive proof that a domestic solar supply chain is not only possible but scalable, even for projects of this massive magnitude.
Beyond its energy output, the Steel River Energy Center is expected to provide significant economic benefits to the region. Each phase of construction is projected to create approximately 700 jobs and generate an estimated $300 million in local tax revenue. Furthermore, Google and Cypress Creek Energy have pledged $8 million toward community funds, which will support local energy affordability programs and include a $400,000 donation for a new playground at Rivercrest Elementary School. This collaboration aims to ensure that the transition to renewable energy provides tangible, long-term value for Arkansas businesses and residents alike.
