Global ocean temperatures have reached an unprecedented high, surpassing previous records as the combined effects of human-driven climate change and the intensifying El Niño weather phenomenon take hold. Data from the European Copernicus climate change service indicates that average surface temperatures outside polar regions hit 21.1C, exceeding the previous record set in March 2024. Scientists express significant concern regarding this trend, noting that such high temperatures are occurring well before the expected peak of El Niño. This sustained warming poses severe risks to marine ecosystems, threatens to accelerate sea-level rise, and intensifies extreme weather patterns worldwide.

The record-breaking figures are derived from measurements taken 10 meters below the surface, utilizing a network of satellites, ships, and buoys. While global estimates involve some uncertainty, experts highlight that the timing of this heat is particularly unusual, as ocean temperatures typically peak in the spring rather than August. The southern hemisphere, which holds the majority of the planet’s ocean surface, exerts a dominant influence on these averages. Researchers warn that as El Niño continues to strengthen toward its anticipated peak near the end of the year, further temperature records may be shattered in the coming years.

Beyond the Pacific, the impact of rising temperatures is visible globally, with regions like the western English Channel experiencing persistent marine heatwaves. Experts attribute this widespread warming to the accumulation of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels, noting that oceans absorb over 90% of the excess heat trapped by these emissions. The consequences of this thermal stress are far-reaching, including the degradation of coral reefs, increased coastal flooding risks, and the potential for more powerful storms fueled by the additional energy and moisture present in warmer waters.
