Cypress Creek Energy has officially launched the Ostrea Solar project in Yakima County, Washington, marking a significant addition to the regional power grid. Supported by $180 million in private investment, the 104 MWDC facility provides renewable energy to Microsoft under a long-term agreement. Beyond its power generation capabilities, the project stands out for its commitment to environmental stewardship. By collaborating with state wildlife and energy agencies, the developer conserved 275 acres of rare shrubsteppe habitat and incorporated specialized wildlife corridors to protect local migratory species, including Rocky Mountain elk, while restoring land with native, pollinator-friendly vegetation.
The project, which connects to the Bonneville Power Administration transmission system, is slated for 40 years of operation under Cypress Creek’s management. A central focus of the development was the rehabilitation of former cropland that had been overtaken by invasive species. Following the removal of these non-native plants, the site was revegetated with a strategic mix of grasses and flowering plants designed to support pollinators without obstructing the solar modules. This land management strategy ensures that the solar site functions as both a clean energy producer and a protected ecological space.
Construction of the facility served as a major economic driver for the area, generating approximately 300 jobs. PCL Solar Constructors managed the build, which emphasized workforce development through a robust apprenticeship program. During the construction phase, 75 apprentices logged 39,000 hours, gaining specialized skills in the construction trades while earning prevailing wages. This project highlights a model for renewable energy development that balances the urgent need for grid capacity with long-term environmental conservation and local economic investment.
