CorPower Ocean has achieved a significant breakthrough for the marine energy sector, as its C4 wave energy buoy became the first device of its kind to receive full certification from DNV. This rigorous, seven-year assessment confirms the technology’s safety and structural integrity, marking a transition for wave power from experimental research to a bankable commercial solution. By successfully navigating the industry’s most stringent testing standards, the Swedish company is now positioned to advance toward large-scale deployments, potentially establishing wave energy as a reliable, steady contributor to the global renewable energy mix alongside wind and solar power.
The C4 buoy, which stands 18 meters tall and weighs 100 tonnes, operates by tethering to the seabed with a tensioned cable. As ocean swells move the buoy, the system converts this mechanical motion into electricity. Its unique “WaveSpring” phase-control technology functions similarly to a human heart, amplifying the motion of waves to maximize energy capture during calm conditions while loosening its resistance during intense storms. This design allowed the prototype to withstand 18.5-meter waves during Storm Domingos in 2023, a performance record that proved critical in securing the DNV certification.
Unlike solar or wind energy, which can be intermittent, wave energy offers a more predictable and consistent power output because waves are generated by weather systems traveling across vast oceans. CorPower plans to leverage this reliability by clustering dozens of buoys into “CorPacks,” which could eventually supply power to hundreds of thousands of homes. By acting as a natural balancing source for the electrical grid, these arrays may reduce the necessity for extensive backup storage. The company is currently targeting the launch of its first commercial-scale arrays in Portugal and Scotland between 2027 and 2029.
