Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are increasingly vital for data centers, offering significant advantages in speed-to-power and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional gas-powered alternatives. A report by the Volta Foundation highlights that while BESS excels in peak shaving and providing bridge power during interconnection delays, it faces stiff competition from fuel cells and remains uncompetitive for long-duration backup or continuous prime power. As hyperscalers like Google and Microsoft expand their investments, the industry must address challenges regarding load visibility, integration, and regulatory standardization to determine whether batteries become a permanent fixture or merely a temporary bridge for data center infrastructure.
The adoption of BESS is being driven by major hyperscalers including Meta, Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, and Microsoft, alongside suppliers such as Fluence, Energy Vault, and Hithium. According to the Volta Foundation’s AI & Data Center Infrastructure committee, the primary strength of these systems lies in their flexibility and ability to handle daily cycling. By managing demand charges and shaving peaks, BESS provides clear economic benefits, provided the local rate structure supports such strategies. Furthermore, BESS acts as a critical bridge for data centers waiting in lengthy interconnection queues, though fuel cells remain a strong competitor in this specific application.
Despite these successes, BESS is not a universal solution. The technology currently struggles to compete with diesel generators for long-duration backup exceeding four hours, and it cannot replace gas turbines or fuel cells for continuous prime power. Technical hurdles also persist; the report notes that integration, control systems, and dispatch governance often cause more issues during commissioning and early operation than the underlying battery cell chemistry itself. A lack of standardized load profiles and integration methods creates uncertainty for investors, complicating the widespread deployment of these systems.
Looking ahead, the next few years will be decisive for the role of BESS in the data center sector. If curtailment-based interconnection becomes standard and the economics of energy duration improve, batteries will likely secure a permanent role in power management. However, if gas supplies stabilize and interconnection queues shorten, the utility of these systems may revert to simple idle backup. To maximize the value of BESS, the Volta Foundation recommends that developers prioritize hybrid architectures from the outset and that policymakers standardize market participation and large load tariffs to provide the clarity needed for future infrastructure investments.
