SolarWindow Technologies has officially launched ElectroFlex, a flexible, ultra-thin solar film designed to generate electricity on both flat and curved surfaces. Measuring just 0.85 mm in thickness, this peel-and-stick product eliminates the need for heavy frames or rigid glass, making it suitable for applications where traditional solar modules are impractical. By utilizing high-efficiency interdigitated back-contact solar cells, the product achieves a 24.4% power conversion efficiency. Currently available to Tier 1 original equipment manufacturers in the United States, the technology is poised for expansion into North American and Asian markets to serve diverse sectors including transportation and architecture.
The ElectroFlex product is constructed as a five-layer composite laminate, featuring a 0.10 mm front encapsulant, 0.16 mm high-efficiency solar cells, a 0.04 mm copper cell backing, a 0.30 mm composite laminate, and a 0.25 mm rear substrate. With a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 73 W/kg, the film is engineered for versatility. SolarWindow provides the necessary electrical systems, including wiring and harnesses, to ensure seamless integration and power delivery for end users.
The manufacturer is targeting a wide range of industries, including aerospace, marine, agriculture, infrastructure, and specialty vehicles. Specific use cases include the roofs of commercial trucks, curved train surfaces, drone structures, and building exteriors. Beyond the launch of ElectroFlex, the company is continuing development on LiquidElectricity, a transparent coating intended to transform glass and plastic surfaces into power-generating elements. This separate technology is designed to capture energy from natural, artificial, reflected, and low-intensity light sources.
