Antora Energy Raises 550 Million To Scale Thermal Batteries

Antora Energy has secured $550 million in Series C funding to scale the production of its thermal battery technology, bringing the company’s total financing to approximately $1 billion. Co-led by G2 Venture Partners and Eclipse, the investment will support the construction of a second domestic manufacturing hub and accelerate the deployment of large-scale energy storage projects. By utilizing solid carbon blocks to store heat for industrial processes and power generation, the startup aims to address the growing energy demands of data centers and factories while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and stabilizing grid infrastructure.

The company’s technology functions similarly to a large-scale resistance heater, warming solid carbon blocks to extreme temperatures. These blocks then release intense light, which can be converted into electricity or used to generate steam for industrial applications. This process allows facilities to store energy when electricity is inexpensive and abundant, then dispatch it during peak demand periods. This approach helps manufacturers avoid high electricity costs and provides a reliable power source for energy-intensive data centers that are currently struggling with grid capacity constraints.

Antora recently launched its first commercial-scale system, a 5-gigawatt-hour thermal battery at a Poet biofuels plant in South Dakota. This project converts wind energy into steam for ethanol production, effectively displacing coal-fueled boilers. To optimize the economics of such installations, Antora is collaborating with utilities like Otter Tail Power to create specialized electricity tariffs. These structures incentivize charging during periods of surplus renewable energy production, benefiting both the facility and the broader grid.

With the new capital, Antora plans to fulfill a growing pipeline of agreements with major industrial players, including chemical, food, and beverage manufacturers. The company is also developing power-sector projects designed to support data center expansion, with potential systems reaching five to ten times the scale of its South Dakota installation. By expanding its manufacturing footprint, Antora intends to meet the urgent need for scalable, clean energy solutions that can overcome current bottlenecks in industrial growth and power delivery.
